History of the Baviaanskloof
Area near Patensie The Baviaanskloof can be discovered along a dusty road that was built between 1880 and 1890 by South Africa's most famous road engineer, Thomas Bain.
The road stretches between the parallel mountain ranges of the Kouga Mountains in the South and Baviaanskloof Mountains in the North. The road also crosses the Grootrivier more than twenty times.

Cockscomb Mountain

Thomas Bain together with his father, Andrew Geddes Bain, who had emigrated from Scotland in 1816, was responsible for 32 of the most important road projects in South Africa. The road leading through the Baviaanskloof was among the last roads built by Thomas Bain before he died in 1893. This road is by far the longest of the 24 roads and mountain passes he had constructed.

Cockscomb Mountain

In 1987 Nature Conservation took over all state-owned land from the Department of Forestry and systematically started to buy privately owned farms to increase the area. They aimed to re-establish the Baviaanskloof as it was found years ago, by re-introducing TB-free Buffalo and Mountain Zebra.
