The 1759m high Cockscomb Mountain is one of the highest mountain peaks in the Eastern Cape and it was known to some of the earlier indigenous tribes as "T'numkwa" (Mountain of the clouds).
The mountain's name stems from the five jagged crests resembling a rooster's comb.
The winding road from Steytlerville via the Grootrivierpoortpass is a spectacular drive. As the road descends towards the Gamtoos valley, it offers a panoramic view of the Elandsberg and Groot Winterhoek mountain ranges, dominated by Cockscomb's Peak.
